Course availability is accurate as of the start of the Clearing process. You can browse the best universities in the UK here.

A-level results are released in the UK on Thursday 18 August and Scottish exam results are out on 9 August, but Ucas Clearing – the direct application route to university courses that still have available places – is already open.

Any students who already have their exam results and do not have any Ucas offers for university courses can apply through clearing from July 2016, while students who do not make the grades for conditional offers can use clearing after A-level results are released.

There are more than 300 different universities and colleges offering places through clearing 2016. Most of the UK’s best universities – featured in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16 – are advertising hundreds of available courses.

Live Blog: A Level Results Day 2016

The University of Edinburgh is the top university to offer places through clearing, but only for the graduate entry LLB law course.

King’s College London, ranked 27th in the world and within the top 10 universities in the UK, is currently listing 89 courses in clearing, ranging from biomedical engineering to film studies.

Many UK universities are offering courses across science, engineering, arts, humanities and social sciences.

The University of Leeds has most courses on offer at a single institution: 1,091 in total. Many courses at Leeds, and other universities, are joint honours degrees that combine more than one subject.

Availability changes quickly as places get snapped up, and students must communicate directly with the universities they are interested in to determine whether the university will accept them. Only once the student has an informal offer directly from the university can they add the clearing choice officially in the Ucas system.

The top five universities in the UK, including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London, do not offer any places through clearing this year. Another six universities featured in THE’s World University Rankings are not open to clearing applicants.

All the ranked universities open for clearing applications are listed below, accurate as of 27 July 2016.
