At University of the West of Scotland (UWS), we are committed to making a difference, to creating a research culture and research environment of the highest quality, to developing collaborative international partnerships, and to ensuring that our activities have real-world applications.
Our work is typified by co-operation and collaboration with our students and other stakeholders across all disciplines. We focus on what we do well and what we can achieve, identifying opportunities we can exploit and problems we can solve together, to help shape society in Scotland and throughout the world.
We believe in our students’ future and have a proud record in delivering work-ready graduates and developing effective partnerships with business, industry and the public and voluntary sectors. Our cutting-edge courses, practical knowledge, and intelligent teaching, help our students get ahead.
We treat our students as individuals, active partners and potential leaders in their fields and professions. We embolden them with the globally relevant knowledge, skills and confidence to think critically, to challenge received wisdom and to develop individually in their future careers.
UWS researchers are making a real difference, working with partner organisations on innovative technologies to tackle a wide range of exciting and diverse issues critical to developing technology, improving lives and creating a more equal society in our regions and beyond. Our research activity also informs our teaching and learning to enrich our students’ experience
In the 2014 REF (Research Excellence Framework) all of our submissions – double the number from the 2008 exercise – were ranked as having international or world leading status in terms of their originality, significance and rigour. We are currently working with companies and organisations such as Mars, Celestica, the Scottish Government, Honeywell, Diagio, Philips Lighting, DuPont, Network Rail, and the BBC on a number of exciting projects.
RESEARCH AT UWS
UWS is one of Scotland’s most modern and dynamic international universities, but has a heritage dating back to 1897. The innovative technologies we are developing help shape society in Scotland and throughout the world: from research in gravitational waves and 5G networking to apps for health monitoring.
We are committed to building a research culture and research environment of the highest quality, to developing collaborative partnerships and to ensuring that our research has real-world applications for industry and commerce to exploit. While our work covers an enormous breadth of interests, it is grouped into three key themes – health, society and sustainability – and we actively support and encourage an interdisciplinary approach to research.
STUDY AT UWS
Our courses are designed with commercial, industrial and professional partners to ensure that learning meets the demands of the world of work. Many programmes are professionally recognised or accredited. From day one UWS students are preparing for their careers: 94% of UWS graduates are in work or study 6 months after graduating (DLHE survey 2015/16); our education degree ranks 4th in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2018; and in 2015 we were recognised as the 4th most improved UK university for student experience in the THE Student Experience survey.
Our students enjoy input from experts from business, industry and the creative industries to provide them with insight and knowledge. Our Creative Media Academy, for example, gives students access to some of the most successful film directors, producers, journalists, TV professionals, digital artists, animators and coders working in the UK. Boasting strong links with industry and the public sector, the Academy has established a creative enterprise cluster at Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts, and at Film City Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest and most successful independent film production hub.
Our 4 West of Scotland campuses in Ayr, Dumfries, Lanarkshire and Paisley are within easy reach of some of Scotland’s most amazing scenery, as well as close to the attractions of the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Our 5th UK campus, UWS London Campus, opened in 2015 in the heart of one of the world’s most bustling cities and has around 1000 students studying at degree and Masters levels.
Ongoing investment will see our new Lanarkshire campus opening in 2018 and providing one of the sector’s most technologically enabled learning environments.
A wide range of career-focused Bachelors, Masters and research degrees is offered across the UWS Schools of:
