 Data & Insight

Helping universities improve through performance analysis

THE is the leading provider of higher education data for the world's research-led institutions. Our work with individual clients builds on the foundations of our World University Rankings, which have been adopted as a geo-political indicator as well as an aid to strategic management of institutions and a crucial factor in the study choices made by millions of students around the world.

Our DataPoints suite of tools is designed to provide detailed performance information across all of the core areas of university activity, as well as allowing comparison and benchmarking against other institutions – whether competitors or collaborators - across regions, subjects and other key criteria.

The insights derived allow leadership teams to set intelligent strategic goals and enhance their education and research environment. Our data enables comparison across more than 1,300 universities, and we have over 100 institutional subscribers already working with us.

Even if you are not in the rankings our data suite will provide you with insight on how you can think about your institution’s relative performance on a global basis.

For the WUR, THE’s in-house data team now ranks 2,150 institutions worldwide, with 1 million data points analysed across 2,600 institutions in 93 countries. In 2016, the global media reach of the rankings was almost 700 million.

The University of Exeter’s governing body has set very clear targets about where they want us to be nationally and internationally. Internationally for them is the big prize – so for the last decade or so we have monitored all the available world data. And the one the governing body asked us to map onto and set our objectives with the THE World University Rankings. So for us, understanding where we are in each ranking, why we are where we are, where we are going and then how do we improve is central not just to the governing body but also to the view of our university community about how we become as good as we really can be, and for us, that’s success in the THE World University Rankings.
Sir Steve Smith, vice-chancellor and chief executive, University of Exeter

Times Higher Education has helped to foster another important dimension of diversity at Harvard: international diversity. The exposure of Harvard’s faculty positions on THEunijobs, since we embarked on our subscription package in October 2015, enhances our outreach efforts to a global community and showcases our institution as a destination of choice for academics around the world. Working with the THE team has also been a pleasure, and has enriched the conversation around international recruitment and retention.
Elizabeth Ancarana, assistant provost for faculty development and diversity, Harvard University

Summits and events

Partnership opportunities for global thought leaders

Our series of world summits brings together Nobel laureates, university leaders, politicians, business people, researchers and academics to share best practice and innovation in the development and leadership of world class universities and to network among global thought leaders.

Speakers at THE summits have included the presidents of many of the world’s top-ranked universities, Nobel laureates such as Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt and Wole Soyinka, political leaders such as Thabo Mbeki, the second post-apartheid president of South Africa, and tech stars such as Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn.

Rankings such as the WUR are presented at these events with our award-winning data team on hand to explain them, allowing institutions better understanding of their findings.

THE runs 8 academic summits across the year which have attracted more than 1,800 university leaders from 72 countries; our team also attends events such as the World Economic Forum in Davos and other gatherings where elite higher education institutions are represented.

Every year THE recognises excellence and achievement in British higher education with the THE Leadership and Management Awards in June and the Times Higher Education Awards in November.

[The THE World Academic Summit 2016] is one of the intellectually most stimulating conferences I’ve been to. This is not a government agency, but I showed up for free, and a lot of other people showed up for free. [This] summit is creating a vehicle for a governance-like discussion.

Through both its content and rankings, THE has been my source of information and intelligence on how the global higher education sector is moving, and the main channel of information for me to understand the higher education and research policy landscape of the UK and elsewhere. I enjoy its sharp and succinct commentary of the current issues and developments that are very insightful and useful. As for the rankings, THE has gained much credibility and wide recognition as it has more balanced set of metrics, and is not subject to gaming.
