THE (Times Higher Education) has been providing trusted performance data on universities for students and their families, university academics, university leaders, governments and industry, since 2004.
Our flagship analysis, the THE World University Rankings, is the definitive list of the top universities globally, including more than 1,250 institutions across 86 countries in 2019. It is the only global university league table to judge research-intensive universities across each one of their core missions: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation), international outlook (staff, students and research); citations (research influence); industry income (knowledge transfer). It uses 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, and all data is independently audited by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), making the THE World University Rankings the only global university rankings to be subjected to full, independent scrutiny of this nature. The methodology is here.
Under the THE World University Rankings umbrella, and using the same range of performance metrics, THE also publishes a series of highly regarded regional and thematic rankings, including the THE Asia University Rankings, the THE Latin America University Rankings and the THE Young University Rankings. We also use this data, combined with an annual Academic Reputation Survey of 10,000 scholars around the world, to produce the THE World Reputation Rankings which looks at the world’s top universities based purely on their academic prestige.
The THE World University Rankings portfolio is completed with a suite of eleven separate detailed subject rankings. The THE World University Rankings by subject include: engineering; computer science; business and economics; life sciences; clinical and health; psychology; law; education; physical science; social science; and arts and humanities. Rankings of teaching excellence
In addition to the 15-year-old THE World University Rankings, THE has also developed a range of international university rankings based purely on teaching and learning. This includes the flagship THE-WSJ College Rankings, focussed on US universities and colleges and the THE Europe Teaching Ranking - which put student learning and student success at their heart. Both rankings employ a major survey of student engagement - putting student voices at the forefront of the ranking - and seek to answer the questions that matter most to students and their families: How likely am I to graduate, pay off my loans and get a good job? Does the college have plenty of resources to teach me properly? Will I be engaged and stretched in the classroom and get good access to my teachers? Is there a diverse campus community? The THE's teaching-focussed rankings portfolio also include the THE Japan University Rankings.
