Aston University is a public research university located in Birmingham’s city centre, England’s second largest city in terms of population.

Its origins date back to the 19th century when a School of Metallurgy was founded in the Birmingham and Midland Institute. By 1895 it had become the Birmingham Municipal Technical School. Several other name changes ensued until Aston gained university status in 1966.

The university is made up of five schools: Engineering and Applied Science, Life and Health Sciences, Languages and Social Sciences, the Aston Medical School and the Aston Business School. It has a total student body of over 11,000 students, comprising around 9,000 undergraduates and more than 2,000 postgraduates.

Aston’s Business School was founded in 1947 and is one of the oldest and largest in the UK. It holds triple accreditation, which is a classification given to only 73 business schools worldwide by the three leading business school accreditation associations.

The university campus is spread across 60 acres of land in the Gosta Green area of Birmingham and comes complete with a swimming pool, sports centres, a library, cafés, restaurants, pubs, and shops, hairdressers, health centres and lots of green space.

The library is spread over four floors and holds more than 250,000 books and 800 periodicals with room for around 700 reading spaces. It also has access to nearly 3,500 electronic journals and 40 electronic databases.

Aston boasts strong links to industry and business and in 2012 The Telegraph newspaper ranked Aston among the top 10 UK universities for producing millionaires.

It also has partnerships in place with more than 140 universities in 40 different countries, including China, Hong Kong and India.

Among Aston’s alumni are stand-up comedian Frankie Boyle, BBC journalist Ivan Noble, and senior international correspondent at CNN, Nic Robertson.

DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS Research Assistant Professor in Optimization and Operations Research / Statistics and Data Science / Financial Mathematics / Engineering and Computational Mathematics / Mathematical Science (several posts) (Ref. 260305001) The Department of Applied Mathematics (AMA) is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences. Apart from making a significant contribution to most of other academic programmes of the University by providing service teaching, the Department also offers master programmes in Applied Mathematics for Science and Technology, Operational Research and Risk Analysis and Quantitative Finance and FinTech. Starting from 2025/26 academic year, the Department offers a new Bachelor Scheme in Applied Mathematics and Finance Analytics and Fast-track Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes and will launch a new master programme, MSc in Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence Technology in 2026/27. Members of the Department have expertise in applied optimization and optimal control, engineering computation, operational research, management science and applied statistics, FinTech, data science and machine learning. Job Purpose: The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to develop a Multimodal AI for Fire Detection & Safety Systems. Key Responsibilities:  Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Collaborator and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Develop and deploy multimodal AI algorithms for fire, smoke, and hot-work detection by fusing optical, thermal/infrared, LiDAR, RADAR, and gas sensor data under varying environmental conditions. Design computer vision and human-behavior analysis models for detecting personnel, posture, casualties, and hazardous situations, including operation in low-visibility scenarios. Implement scene mapping, environment perception, and path-planning algorithms using LiDAR and RADAR data to support evacuation guidance and first-responder navigation. Build real-time predictive models for fire intensity and spread forecasting and integrate LLM-based scene description and decision support into an end-to-end deployable system. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Electrical / Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a closely related discipline, with foundational knowledge in signal processing and machine learning. Working knowledge of computer vision and deep learning concepts, including object detection and image-based classification, with hands-on experience using Python and at least one deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow). Basic experience handling and processing sensor data (e.g., camera, thermal, LiDAR, RADAR, or similar perception sensors) in real-world or laboratory settings. Familiarity with Linux-based development environments and standard software tools for data analysis, model training, and evaluation. Ability to independently implement, test, and document applied research solutions, with prior experience through projects, internships, or research assistantships considered sufficient. Prior experience in publishing is desirable.
