Chinese universities have dominated the BRICS & Emerging Economies University Rankings 2017, a new ranking of higher education institutions published by Times Higher Education.

Out of 300 ranked universities, China took more than 50 places, with Peking University claiming the top place overall, followed by Tsinghua University in second place.

The ranking shines a spotlight on universities in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but also includes universities in 36 other countries classed as emerging economies, including Taiwan, Turkey and the Czech Republic, each of which ha at least 10 institutions in the ranking.

Taiwan is the only country outside the main countries featured in the BRICS acronym to have a university in the top 10 of the ranking.

Most of the universities in the top 10 also appear in the top 200 of the Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

The BRICS & Emerging Economies University Rankings uses the same 13 performance indicators as the World University Rankings, measuring teaching, research, research impact, industry income and international outlook.

Only institutions in countries classed by the FTSE as Advanced Emerging, Secondary Emerging or Frontier are eligible for inclusion in the BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings.

In total, 300 universities are ranked this year.
