The Durban University of Technology was established in 2002 with the merging of two prestigious institutions: ML Sultan, and Technikon Natal. The university is located in two of KwaZulu-Natal’s cities: the coastal city of Durban and the capital city of Pietmaritzburg. The university has six faculties in total: accounting and informatics, applied sciences, arts and design, engineering and the built environment, health sciences, and management sciences. Across these faculties, students can enroll in courses from ecotourism to emergency medical care to chemical engineering among others. Students can study from undergraduate, to postgraduate and doctorate levels. There is also a writing centre and centre for excellence in learning and teaching. To aid students in their entrepreneurial activities, they have access to both the Durban and Midlands Entrepreneurial Centre and Desks as a platform for students to create start-up companies and make their business ideas a reality. They also have access to the award-winning Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Rapid Incubator, helping students to develop sustainable student and community enterprises. The city of Piermaritzburg is home to several schools and universities creating a diverse student environment. The city hosts an abundance of entertainment and attractions for students and visitors to enjoy. It is home to the oldest football club in South Africa, Savages FC. Attractions include: Albert Falls Nature Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal Museum and National Botanical Garden. The coastal city of Durban is the third most populous city in South Africa, it has been awarded the UNESCO City of Literature status, and hosted the 2015 FIFA World Cup. Here, students have access to sandy beaches, such as the Golden Mile Beach, as well as a warm subtropical climate to enjoy.

About EPrints Services As a result of our continued success, we are hiring into a Software Engineering / Customer Support role. We primarily develop and maintain Web-based repository services for a wide variety of both education and commercial organisations all over the World. At our core is an open source repository platform, EPrints, which provides a flexible way to configure operations concerning data capture, structure and presentation, and a range of services that allow content to be accessed in a variety of ways. We support our many customers by maintaining our own Linux based virtual hosting infrastructure. We are a well established small Enterprise team based in the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. About You As part of the team, you will take responsibility for the development and support of customer focused projects, for both EPrints systems and more varied engineering activities. These typically relate to open access, open data, digital education, content management and systems integrations. All projects require some level of design, programming, testing, project management, and customer support. It is essential you have: Proven industrial experience and / or  PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Computer Science or related discipline. In addition, some knowledge of Linux as well as Web relevant technologies, for example XML, SQL, JavaScript and CSS is required. Experience in high level programming languages such as Python, PHP or Perl will be highly desirable. This role is offered at either Level 4 or Level 5 (Senior) depending on your experience. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  Job Details This Research Engineer will contribute to an international joint project related to policy-making in urban planning and design, focusing on developing a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework and tool. The work will involve integrating results from GeoTOPSIS and/or VectorMCDA in QGIS, enhancing spatial decision support for blue–green infrastructure and ecosystem service evaluation. The Research Engineer will lead the software development and interface programming, working closely with the GIS Research Fellow and interdisciplinary project team members to create a user-friendly, scalable decision-support tool for planners and policymakers. As part of understanding the ecosystem services that are involved in Singapore, the successful candidate will also be expected to perform some field-based data collection during the duration of the project. Key Responsibilities Work closely with the PI, Co-PI, and research team to ensure timely completion of all project deliverables. Implement and enhance GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA algorithms within QGIS using Python or equivalent programming frameworks. Develop a user-friendly interface (QGIS plugin or web-based application) for decision-making and data visualization. Collaborate with the GIS Research Fellow to integrate ecosystem service layers and model outputs. Conduct tool testing, validation, and iterative refinement based on stakeholder feedback. Manage documentation, data pipelines, and version control. Support system deployment on a secure project server and ensure cross-platform interoperability. Assist in project management and support the team in facilitating and organizing workshops, stakeholder sessions, and policy dialogues. Be involved in regular field work data collection and to perform environmental and biodiversity surveys (fish, birds and insects) as part of a research team. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geomatics, Environmental Informatics, or related fields. Strong programming skills in Python, R, or JavaScript for spatial analysis, interface development, or web applications. Experience in plugin or dashboard development (e.g., PyQGIS, Dash, Streamlit, or web-GIS frameworks). Familiarity with GIS concepts and geospatial data structures; experience with QGIS or ArcGIS will be an advantage. Ability to translate analytical models into intuitive, interactive user interfaces. Good teamwork, documentation, and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and able to learn new tools and frameworks independently. Additional Note: While prior experience with GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA is not mandatory, it will be considered a strong advantage. On-the-job training will be provided to equip the candidate with necessary methods and integration workflows with ecosystem service models and spatial datasets. Key Competencies Strong programming skills (Python/R/JavaScript) for tool and interface development. Ability to implement or learn GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA methods in GIS environments.
