Overview of Sun Yat-sen University
Sun Yat-sen University, founded in 1924 by the Chinese democratic revolutionary Dr. Sun Yat-sen, is a preeminent academic and cultural center in South China. Its main campuses are located in the modern metropolis of Guangzhou, known formerly in the West as Canton, with a branch campus nestled in the picturesque coastal city of Zhuhai. Under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the University is strongly supported by both the Ministry and Guangdong Province and is a member of Projects 211 and 985, exclusive national higher education organizations at the vanguard of the drive to develop Chinese universities into world-class institutions. With a firmly established reputation as a top-ten university nationally and a burgeoning international profile, SYSU is moving from strength to strength as it strives to become a first-tier world university and global center of learning.

Outstanding disciplinary influence: SYSU prides itself on over 40 schools and departments and its comprehensive range of disciplines, with graduate education spanning all disciplines except military science. Seventeen disciplines at SYSU rank among the world’s top one percent (ESI 2015), placing the University second among mainland Chinese universities; seven disciplines rank in the world’s top 0.5 percent, and two disciplines rank in the world’s top 0.1 percent.
First-rate faculty team: SYSU counts twelve members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering among its faculty. It has fifty-five faculty members included in the Chang Jiang Scholars Program and seventy-four members included in the Outstanding Young Experts program, and is among the leading Chinese universities in the number of academics included in the national One Thousand Talents Program for the development of scholars and researchers.
High quality talent cultivation: High employment rates and degrees of job satisfaction among both undergraduate and graduate level alumni and high pass rates for major professional qualification exams are indicators which affirm SYSU’s role as a leading developer of talent in China.
Continuous increase in scientific research capacity: Annual research grants exceeded RMB 1 billion (USD 161 million) in each of the last three years, rising to over RMB 1.3 billion (USD 209 million) in 2014, placing SYSU in a top position among mainland Chinese universities. At present, the University features four state key laboratories, and two state professional laboratories, among many high-level research platforms.

Comprehensive medical sciences and outstanding social services: SYSU has eight comprehensive affiliated hospitals, four campus medical centers, three community service centers, and thirty-three teaching hospitals (eight of which are not directly affiliated hospitals), which form an extensive and exemplary medical service network. Summer Program at SYSU
Since 2010, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) has operated the International Summer Program (ISP) every July. The program serves as a widely recognized global gathering for international students, regular SYSU students, and professors. The program links Chinese language, politics and cultural studies, and business management, especially in relation to the Pearl River Delta and South China regions, where SYSU is located.
The program covers a wide range of topics, reflecting both the past 10 years of economic achievements and recent challenges to both the region and the country. In addition to classroom instruction, local company visits and cultural excursions are also offered in the program. Being part of this program means meeting new people, approaching new cultures, and tapping into new resources.
Students from various cultural backgrounds will be recruited to study in the same classroom. SYSU will provide a cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural and cross-border atmosphere of collaborative learning, in addition to varied campus cultural activities for ISP students to broaden their international horizons and enhance their international competencies.
