Founded in 1909, the Indian Institute of Science (IIS) is situated in Bangalore, the capital of India’s southern Karnataka state.

The university has one undergraduate programme - the bachelor of science (research) degree which lasts four years. All students take modules in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and humanities and there is a strong emphasis on engineering. In the final year students undertake their own research oriented project supervised by an academic. Submission of applications takes place between February and March.

There are also master’s courses in management studies, technology and design as well as PhD programmes. Research students make up more than 70 per cent of the entire student body at IIS.

The university is made up of six main departments: biological sciences, chemical sciences, electrical sciences, interdisciplinary research, mechanical sciences, and physical and mathematical sciences. There are also individual centres for brain research, scientific and industrial consultancy, and sponsored schemes and projects.

Academics at the institute conduct research in several areas of science and technology including space science, material science and engineering, environmental and atmospheric sciences, endocrinology and genetic engineering. The university has also identified three areas for upcoming research: genomics, nano-sciences and mathematics.

More than 75 scholars at the institute have won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB).

The university’s gymkhana – its sports and culture centre – is spread over 26 acres and home to 27 clubs. There is also a health centre for staff, students and their families and, in 2001, the institution established a Centre for Counselling and Support.

Your personal sphere of influence: The Ries lab is developing super-resolution microscopy methods for structural cell biology and is looking for a PhD student to join the team. The Max Perutz Labs is a joint research institute of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. It was founded in 2005 to deepen the collaboration between the two universities in the field of molecular biosciences. Approximately 450 scientists from over 40 nations work in 40 research groups at the institute, investigating fundamental questions in molecular and cell biology. The WorldPop research group, within the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Southampton is an award winning, multi-sectoral team of researchers, technicians and project specialists working on producing data on population distributions and characteristics at high spatial resolution. WorldPop | University of Southampton WorldPop has a diverse portfolio of projects, including large multi-million-pound collaborative projects with partner organisations, such as the Gates Foundation, the Gavi Vaccine Alliances, UN agencies, commercial data providers and other international development organisations. We are seeking to recruit a Finance Manager to provide effective financial management to WorldPop’s activities. Operationally the post holder will oversee the WorldPop Group finances, seeking to provide financial advice, guidance and management information of funded projects. The post holder will work closely with other areas of Finance supporting the process for the approval of costings and contracts and acting as the focal point of contact for all research and enterprise contracts and international project partners.  As a successful Business Partner the post holder will work with the WorldPop Senior Leadership Team developing a financial sustainability plan for WorldPop helping the group achieve its strategic financial objectives. The successful candidate will have experience in financially managing externally funded projects working as part of a programme team and should be able to demonstrate significant knowledge of accounting standards. Candidates with previous experience in higher education accounting, internationally funded project reporting, budget setting and reconciliation will be looked on favourably. A flexible working pattern at a minimum of 80% full time equivalent will be considered for this role. The successful candidate will be line managed by the Deputy Head of Faculty Finance and work under the supervision of the WorldPop Programme Manager and Director at the Highfield campus of the University of Southampton.
