Tianjin University is a National Key University directly under the administration of the Ministry of the Education, and its history can be traced back to Peiyang University, the first modern university in China, which was founded on October 2, 1895. It was renamed Tianjin University after the nationwide restructuring of colleges and departments in 1951. In 1959, Tianjin University was identified as one of the first batch of the 16 National Key Universities designated by the government, and it is also among the first group of institutions of higher learning to be included into the “211” and “985" Projects of national investment for developing world class universities. During the past years, Tianjin University has made significant contributions to economic and social development, which must be due to its cultivation of a large number of high-level talents, and its outstanding achievements.

To build a strong nation, it is crucial for the education system to be set up and developed for the preservation of talents. The establishment and operation of the University aims to promote education for the ultimate improvement of national strength and prosperity, in accord with the University’s motto of "Seeking Truth from Facts”. The University exalts preservation of its own traditions, in which the spirit of “precision in learning and strictness in teaching” is encouraged. Patriotism and devotion to the country is also considered worthy goals to hold onto, tied in with multiple avenues to encourage undaunted inquiry into academic truth, to foster competent talent, to pass on the cultural heritages, to buttress the progress of our nation and to create a promising future.

In 2014, THE CONSTITUTION OF TIANJIN UNIVERSITY was officially approved by the Ministry of Education and to further define the University’s overall development goals facing the new century and the development and promotion of quality education. In 2015, the new campus, Peiyangyuan Campus was opened and commenced operation, and nearly 20 thousand students, faculty and staff live there. The University also celebrated its 120th anniversary that year.

Tianjin University will uphold its people-oriented vision, promote comprehensive reform in an all-round way, constantly improve the systems of a modern university, and strive vigorously toward the goal of becoming a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and TJU traits.

The Role The School seeks to appoint a two-year Career Development Fellow in French & Francophone Studies. Applications are welcome from those working in all areas of French & Francophone literary and cultural studies, and we are especially interested to receive applications from those with specialisms in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. In line with institutional expectations for Career Development Fellowships, your time will be divided between the three core activities of teaching (60%), research (30%) and citizenship (10%). The post offers an exciting opportunity to develop internationally excellent research/scholarship and teaching while providing unrivalled, tailored support for your career progression at an exciting and progressive institution. Given the developmental nature of the role it is not anticipated that the post will be extended beyond the initial fixed term of two years. Following the end of the term, the role-holder will be in a strong position to apply for relevant permanent academic roles, should they arise, at Durham or elsewhere. Successful applicants are normally expected to be within 8 years of completing their PhD, although career breaks for parental leave and/or health reasons will be considered. This is because the role is aimed at early career academics who would benefit from a structured development programme and provision of both formal and 'on the job' training. The post is also open to those who are returning to academia after a career in another sector. Successful applicants will ideally be in post by 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Description We are seeking Post-Doctoral Associates who are passionate about Data Science, with an emphasis in Computational Social Science, with a starting date of September 1, 2026. Some of the possible research topics include: (i) social media analysis, (ii) collaboration and teamwork, (iii) gender inequality, (iv) diversity, (v) online controlled experiments, and (vi) network science. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and hard-working with a PhD in Data Science, Computational Social Science, Computer Science, or Information Science, with no more than five years post receipt of the PhD. The position requires experience with at least one of the following: Data Science, Machine Learning, Computational Social Science, Big Data. Relevant skills could include statistical analysis, data management and collection, causal inference, network analysis, graph theory, visualizations, and online tool development. Experience in conducting online controlled experiments is also desired, but not required. Excellent communication skills in English, ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, and scientific creativity are essential. Selected candidates will spend half their time on collaborative research with Bedoor AlShebli, an Assistant Professor in Computational Social Science in the Social Science Division at NYUAD, and half their time on independent research. The selected candidate will receive an appointment for three years.
