Founded in 1981, the University of Macau (UM) is a comprehensive research-oriented public university of international standing in Macao, at the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Anchored in this dynamic region, UM integrates deep regional engagement with a strong international outlook. With English as the primary medium of instruction, the university has built a world-class faculty, with 80% of its academic staff recruited from outside Macao. This international academic community brings diverse expertise and perspectives that underpin UM’s research excellence and global impact.

UM has demonstrated sustained progress in major global rankings in recent years. The university ranks 145th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. In the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, UM is among the top 1% globally in 16 fields, with Engineering, Computer Science, and Pharmacology & Toxicology ranked in the top 0.1%.

UM’s research strategy is built around a distinctive four-pillar framework: (1) three state key laboratories: the State Key Laboratory of Mechanism and Quality of Chinese Medicine, the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, and the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City; (2) three emerging research fields: precision medicine, advanced materials, and regional oceanography; (3) three interdisciplinary priority areas: artificial intelligence and robotics, data science, and cognitive and brain sciences; and (4) three dedicated research platforms in the humanities and social sciences. Together, these pillars create a coherent and balanced ecosystem that strengthens disciplinary depth while fostering interdisciplinary innovation.

This strategic framework is supported by robust research and innovation infrastructure. UM hosts five key research institutes affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education and operates over 30 joint laboratories in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, industry, and other leading institutions. The university promotes knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship through platforms such asthe University of Macau Advanced Research Institute in Hengqin and the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. To date,more than 80 start-ups have been incubated, accelerating the translation of research outcomes into practical applications and contributing to the development of the Greater Bay Area.

UM is ranked 145th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and 267th in the QS World University Rankings. With a scenic campus of approximately 1 km2 on Hengqin island, UM has achieved significant progress in the past decade as evidenced by its rising international repute, state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, and the establishment of three State Key Laboratories in microelectronics, Chinese medicine, and internet of things for smart city. Committed to supporting Macao’s economic diversification and the development of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, UM actively advances frontier research and develops interdisciplinary programmes in a range of strategic areas, including precision oncology, advanced materials, regional oceanography, artificial intelligence and robotics, data science, cognitive and brain science, and economics and finance. Leveraging its ‘4-in-1’ model of education and residential college system, UM provides all-round undergraduate education, nurturing talent to support social and economic development of Macao and the wider GBA. As part of its continued development, UM is establishing a new campus in the Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, setting the stage for the university to become the first higher education institution in Macao to extend operations into the Cooperation Zone. Scheduled to commence operations in 2028, the Cooperation Zone campus will usher in the ‘one university, two campuses’ model, further strengthening UM’s capacity for teaching and research. The university uses English as its working language and primary medium of instruction. The Faculty of Medicine (FMD) was established in August 2026 through the expansion and restructuring of the former Faculty of Health Sciences. The Faculty's educational mission is delivered through five academic departments: the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Department of Clinical Medicine, Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Public Health and Medicinal Administration, and Department of Medicinal Food and Nutrition Sciences. The Faculty's research mission is supported by three major research platforms: the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), the State Key Laboratory of Mechanism and Quality of Chinese Medicine (SKL-MQCM), and the Ministry of Education Frontiers Science Centre for Precision Oncology (FSCPO). Together, these platforms support a broad spectrum of research activities spanning biomedical sciences, clinical and translational medicine, Chinese medical sciences, and related interdisciplinary fields. Precision oncology is a key strategic research focus of FMD, with FSCPO serving as a flagship platform for advancing translational research from scientific discovery to clinical application. FMD is now recruiting research personnel with extensive research experience in at least one of the ten strategic research directions of FMD: (1) Precision Oncology, (2) Stem Cell and Development, (3) Aging, Neural and Metabolism Disorders and Infectious Diseases, (4) Biomedical Imaging, (5) Data Science, (6) Drug Development, (7) Neuropsychiatry, (8) Structural Biology, (9) Translational Medicine, and (10) Public Health. Initial appointment is up to 12 months with a possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement. Qualifications Visiting Fellows: A doctoral degree and professional rank at Associate Professor or above in related disciplines; a solid research record and expertise. Research Assistant Professors: A doctoral degree in relevant disciplines, with a proven track record of research publications and achievements. Post-doctoral research experience is highly desirable. Postdoctoral Fellows: A doctoral degree in related disciplines; a solid record of publication and scientific training. Research Assistants: A bachelor’s degree or above in related disciplines with solid research experience in health science-related studies. The selected candidate is expected to assume duty as soon as possible. Remuneration Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
