UM advances the translation of research from the laboratory to market

In recent years, the University of Macau (UM) has strengthened its research capabilities and stepped up efforts to commercialise its innovations. By expanding industry-academia-research collaboration, supporting entrepreneurship, and strengthening regional partnerships, UM is creating more opportunities for research breakthroughs to move beyond the laboratory and into the market, contributing to social progress and economic development.

Promoting knowledge transfer and technology application

UM’s Research Services and Knowledge Transfer Office plays a central role in bringing the university’s research into practical use. The office coordinates and supports academic research, technological innovation, and knowledge transfer across the university. Beyond assisting researchers with their projects, it helps identify opportunities to apply new technologies and develop research findings into products and services with social value and commercial potential. These efforts also help extend the reach and impact of UM’s research.

Building a comprehensive innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem

UM’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship provides support at every stage of the journey from research to business. The centre has built a comprehensive innovation ecosystem encompassing achievement discovery, proof of concept, project acceleration, start-up incubation, and industry cooperation. Together, these activities have established a distinctive model for research commercialisation and start-up incubation with growing influence in the region. The centre assists UM faculty, students, and alumni in transforming research findings and innovative ideas into entrepreneurial ventures. To date, it has incubated more than 80 start-ups, helping promising technologies make the transition from the laboratory to the market. By connecting entrepreneurs with industry partners, investors, and financing opportunities, the centre also helps accelerate business development while nurturing talent equipped with both research expertise and commercial skills.

Leveraging Hengqin to advance cross-border research translation

The development of the Greater Bay Area has opened new opportunities for UM to bring its research closer to industry through cross-border collaboration. A key part of this effort is the University of Macau Advanced Research Institute in Hengqin, established in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin to promote technological innovation and the application of research findings. The institute draws on the advantages of the ‘30-minute cross-border R&D and transformation system’ linking Macao and Hengqin. By integrating research, transformation, investment, and incubation, it supports the ‘Macao R&D, Hengqin transformation’ model. This approach enables research teams to connect more effectively with industry and respond to market needs, helping promising innovations progress towards commercial application.

Developing a demonstration base for industry-academia-research collaboration in the Greater Bay Area

As UM’s first demonstration base for industry-academic-research collaboration in the Greater Bay Area, the Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute brings together technological and research resources from Macao and the Chinese mainland. Working with leading universities and enterprises, the institute undertakes collaborative research and innovation projects that address industry needs. More than 330 projects have been undertaken to date, producing research findings and technologies that support industrial upgrading and transformation across the Greater Bay Area.

Bridging university research and industry

UMTEC Limited, a public capital enterprise owned by UM, plays an important role in connecting UM’s research community with industry and bringing innovations closer to commercial use. Through technology transfer, technical consultancy, patent licensing, and collaborative research and development, the company helps identify practical applications for UM technologies and build partnerships with businesses. These efforts create more opportunities for the university’s research to be adopted by industry and generate economic value.

From the laboratory to the market

The value of university research extends beyond academic publications and patents. Its wider impact lies in its potential to address real-world challenges, advance industries, and benefit society. From knowledge creation and technology transfer to innovation, entrepreneurship, and regional collaboration, UM is building a comprehensive framework for bringing research to market. By enabling more breakthroughs to move beyond the university and into practical and commercial applications, UM is contributing to Macao’s economic diversification and supporting technological innovation across the Greater Bay Area.
