The UK Council for Graduate Education has set up a working party to examine research training in creative and performing arts and design. It has been convened by Elaine Thomas, director of the Surrey Institute of Art and Design. Its members are: Graham Barber, University of Leeds; Sandra Harris, Nottingham Trent University; Michael Jubb, director of programmes, Arts and Humanities Research Board; Janet Lansdale, University of Surrey; Malcolm LeGrice, the London Institute; Chris Rust, Sheffield Hallam University; Victor Sage, University of East Anglia; and Martin White, University of Bristol.
Janet Todd, of the University of East Anglia, has taken a chair in the School of Scottish and English Language and Literature at Glasgow University.
Jim Pywell is to be fellow in music at the University of Bradford, succeeding Anthony Hall.

Julie Treanor, former assistant director of the Royal College of Nursing, has been appointed director of external relations at Oxford Brookes University. Christine Macfarlane joined Oxford Brookes as director of research services and business development in July.
Archie Burnett, professor of English at Oxford Brookes, has been appointed co-director of the editorial institute and professor of English at Boston University.
Geert Savelsbergh, a professor at the Vrije Universiteit, the Netherlands, is to be professor in perceptual motor development at the Crewe and Alsager campus of Manchester Metropolitan University.
