Education secretary David Blunkett today appointed the following as directors of the holding company for the e-university : Bob Boucher , vice-chancellor of the University of Sheffield; Sandra Burslem , vice-chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University; Sir Colin Campbell , vice-chancellor of the University of Nottingham; Ron Cooke , vice-chancellor of the University of York; Gary Crossley , principal of the Central School of Speech and Drama; Sir Brian Fender , chief executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England; Walter Greaves , chair of the council of Brunel University; Gerry McKenna , vice-chancellor of Ulster University; Alfred Morris , vice-chancellor of the University of the West of England; Tim O'Shea , master of Birkbeck College, London; Sir Gareth Roberts , president of Wolfson College, Oxford; and Dorma Urwin , chair of the Standing Conference of Principals and principal of University College Worcester.

Mr Blunkett has also appointed the following to the e-university 's committee for academic quality: Madeleine Atkins , pro vice-chancellor of the University of Newcastle; Colin Bell , vice-chancellor of the University of Bradford; Anthony Cryer , head of the academic registrary at the University of Cardiff; Sir Brian Fender , chief executive of the Hefce; Kel Fidler , professor of electronics at the University of York; Philip Jones , pro vice-chancellor at the University of Sheffield; Helen O'Sullivan , head of quality assurance at Liverpool Hope University College; John Slater , interim technology director for the e-university, on secondment from his post as head of the technologies centre at the Institute for Learning and Teaching; Rick Trainor , vice-chancellor of the University of Greenwich; David Urwin , vice-master of Birkbeck College, London; and Tristam Wyatt , director of distance and online learning at the University of Oxford.
