APPOINTMENTS

Institute of Education
Ashley Kent
, in the school of mathematics, science and technology, has been promoted to professor of education.
Lucy Green , school of arts and humanities, has been promoted to reader of music education.

Glasgow School of Art
Klaus Jung
has been appointed head of fine art at the school, he is currently rector of the Kunsthogskolen in Bergen and a former rector at the  Kunstakademie in Trondheim. He is vice president of the European League of Institutes of the Arts and was, until 2000, Head of the Network of Nordic Schools of Fine Art.

University of Oxford
Vivienne Shue
, currently Frank and Rosa Rhodes professor of Chinese government at Cornell University, has been appointed the university's first professor of the study of contemporary China and will also become a fellow of St. Antony's when she takes up her post in August, 2002.

Royal Holloway, University of London
Stephen R. Hill
, currently deputy director and professor of management at the London School of Economics and Political Science and editor of the British Journal of Sociology since 1995, will succeed Drummond Bone as principal of Royal Holloway.

Incorporated Society of Musicians
John Morehen
, professor in the University of Nottingham's department of music, has been named president-elect.

Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists, USA
Peter Pell
, professor emeritus of civil engineering at the University of Nottingham has been elected to honorary membership.

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK
John Morgan
, professor and director of the centre for comparative education research at the University of Nottingham, has been appointed to the board of the commission.


AWARDS AND PRIZES

University of Aberdeen
Alan Spence
, award winning author of poetry, novels, short stories and plays and director of WORD, the university's writers festival, has been appointed to a personal chair in creative writing.

Royal College of Anaesthetists
Barbara Weaver
of the veterinary school at the University of Bristol, has been awarded an honorary fellowship of the college.

The University of Cambridge
The Adams Prize is awarded by the Faculty of Mathematics and St. John's College. This year's winner is Susan Howson , who currently holds a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellowship in conjunction with a lectureship at the University of Nottingham.

Heriot-Watt University
The university will award the following honorary doctorates:

DEng :
David Wallace , professor and vice-chancellor of Loughborough University, in recognition of his distinguished career in academic physics, in educational leadership, and in public service;
Koen Weber , emeritus professor of petroleum geology at the Technical University of Delft, in recognition of his distinguished professional career and his contribution to the area of petroleum geophysics.

Stella Rotenberg , poet, who will be awarded a Doctorate of Literature in recognition of her poetic achievement;
Peter Hall , Bartlett professor of planning at University College London, in recognition of his distinguished academic career and his contribution to planning and public policy;
Kim Winser , chief executive of Pringle Scotland, in recognition of her contribution to the textile industry in her management of Pringle

Hans Buehlmann , professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, who will in recognition of his distinguished academic career and his contribution to Actuarial Science;
Ahmed Zewail , professor and director of the Laboratory for Molecular Sciences at the California Institute of Technology, in recognition of his distinguished academic career and his pre-eminence in the field of laser chemistry;
John Krebs , chairman of the Food Standards Agency, in recognition of his distinguished career in academia and in public service.

Evelyn Glennie , musician, in recognition of her outstanding musical career;
Peter Maxwell Davies , composer, in recognition of his outstanding musical and artistic achievements;
Jonathon Edwards , triple-jumper and Olympic Athlete, in recognition of his outstanding career as an athlete and role model to young people.

Minerals Metals and Materials Society
The society awarded the J. Keith Brimacombe Presidential Scholarship for 2002 to Laura Pocock , who is in her final year of an MEng degree in materials science at the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology.

Tilberg University, The Netherlands
The University has awarded three doctorates honoris causa, as follows:
Kofi Annan , secretary general of the United Nations;
Ariel Rubinstein , professor in economics at Tel Aviv University and Princeton University;
Hans-Dieter Klingemann , professor of political science at the Freie Universität, Berlin.
