The Biotechnology and Biological Research Council has appointed to its council: Cheryll Tickle , professor of developmental biology at the University of Dundee; Tom Kirkwood , head of the department of gerontology at the University of Newcastle; and Ian Ragan , executive director of Neuroscience Research Europe.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has appointed to its council: David Grant , director of technology at Marconi; Andrew Rickman , chairman of Bookham Technology; and Ann Dowling , professor of mechanical engineering at Cambridge University.

The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils has appointed to its council: David Williams , head of the department of clinical engineering at the University of Liverpool; Richard Brook , chief executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council; Ian Halliday , chief executive of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council; and Sir George Radda , chief executive of the Medical Research Council.

The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council has appointed to its council: George Efstahiou , professor of astrophysics at the University of Cambridge; Brian Foster , professor of experimental physics at the University of Bristol; and Judith Scott , chief executive of the British Computer Society.

The University of Manchester has appointed Terry Eagleton , formerly of the University of Oxford, professor of cultural theory; Terry Jones , formerly of the University of London, professor of molecular imaging; Christopher Todd , previously of the University of Cambridge, professor of primary care and community health; Christopher Humphrey , of the University of Sheffield, professor of accounting; Timothy O'Leary , formerly of University College Cork and the University of Michigan business school, to professor of accounting; Josephine Shaw , of the University of Leeds, professor of European law; Andrew McGee , of the University of Leeds, professor of law; and Gerard McCormack , of the University of Essex, professor of law.

The university has also made Ann Rosalie Davies , formerly keeper in Egyptology at the Manchester Museum, professor; Martin Marshall , professor of general practice; and Werner de Bondt , professor of finance.
