The Royal Academy of Music has appointed its first professors: Jonathan Freeman-Attwood , vice-principal and director of studies; Sebastian Bell , head of woodwind; John Wallace , head of brass; and Simon Bainbridge , head of composition.

Ken Bowen , of Royal Hollo-way, University of London, has been made a companion of operational research by the Operational Research Society .

Peter Guthrie has been appointed professor of engineering for sustainable development at the University of Cambridge .

Diplomat Sir David Hannay has been elected pro chancellor of the University of Birmingham .

Robert Mair has become master of Jesus College, Cambridge .

Alan McGregor , head of the department of medicine at King's College, London, has been appointed chairman of the strategy advisory committee for the research councils' Basic Technology Research Programme .

David Mearns , of the counselling unit at the University of Dundee, has been appointed a member of the advisory group on psychotherapy to the Department of Health .

Steve Nickell , part-time professor of economics at the London School of Economics, has been appointed president of the Royal Economic Society .

Damian O'Kane , of the University of Ulster, has been appointed senior consultant on widening participation to Universities UK .

Stephen Waring has been appointed assistant director of New College , University of Southampton .

William Wilhelm , currently at Boston College's Wallace E. Carroll School of Management, has been appointed Peter Moores professor of management studies at the Saïd Business School and a professorial fellow of St Edmund Hall, Oxford .
