Founded in 1863, Boston College was set up by Jesuits to educate the city’s predominantly Catholic Irish immigrant community.
It is a private research university known as “The Heights” to its students and staff, owing to its location perched in the village of Chestnut Hill in Massachusetts.
Boston College has some of the earliest examples of collegiate gothic architecture in North America, and has expanded since its inception to include nine schools and colleges, primarily in the liberal arts.
The idea of a college for Boston was first announced by the city’s second bishop in 1825, but struggled to find its feet amid suspicion from Protestants in the city and its distance from Maryland, where Jesuits were better established.
It was continued, however, and received a formal charter from Massachusetts in 1863, with an intake of about 22 students the following year and a special emphasis on philosophy and theology – which continues today.
The 175 acre main campus outside Boston city centre has more than 120 buildings, with eight research libraries and more than 700 academic staff working across them.
Designed by Charles Donagh Maginnis, the campus was never completed along the lines of the architect’s plans for a complex cruciform layout, but the centre at least was built according to plan.
Gasson Hall, St Mary’s Hall, Devlin Hall and the Bapst Library are the key examples of the gothic style, and still seen as the campus’ recognisable middle.
Out of an applicant pool of 29,486, the college accepted about 9,000 on to its undergraduate studies for the class graduating in 2019, with some 14,000 in total enrolling – giving it an acceptance rate of about 29 per cent.
With an endowment of more than $2 billion as of 2014, Boston College is one of the wealthiest colleges in the region – although its wealth does not come close to Harvard’s $30 billion.

Department of Forest Sciences of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for a Doctoral researcher in forest planning starting from February 2026, or as agreed. The doctoral researcher will be offered a full-time contract for an initial 1 year, with the possibility for extension to the end of August 2029, corresponding with the possible extension of the ForTran (fortran.fi/en) Strategic Research Council funding. The selected appointee will be informed of the possible continuation as soon as a decision is made by the RCF. There will be a trial period of 6 months at the beginning of the employment. Position description: The successful candidate will work in the project “ForTran - Forests in systemic transition – balancing efficiency with fairness and resilience.” funded by the Research -Council of Finland. The work will be conducted in a transdisciplinary group of researchers, including anthropologists, ecologists, business and management scientists, systems scientists and forest scientists. This position will prioritize the developing a clear method to identify and quantify the ecological and societal boundaries of forest use. This research will enhance tools used in forest planning, use of forest simulators through a simulation and optimization framework. The research can focus on how to improve the use of decision support tools by private forest owners; focus on the trade-offs and synergies between sustainability of timber harvesting and other ecosystem services; focus on how to integrate uncertainty to quantify and assess the robustness of the sustainability of forests. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in chemical biology with a strong focus on biocatalysis. The associate will join a multi-disciplinary research team within the Schnepel group that focuses on the development of novel biocatalysts for the synthesis of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals and bioconjugation chemistry. The research project led by Dr Christian Schnepel will involve the discovery, development and study of biocatalysts for the synthesis of peptide-based therapeutics. The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with the industry partner Johnson & Johnson in Belgium to develop cutting-edge bio-synthetic methodologies for drug discovery and large-scale manufacturing. This post is fixed term for 12 months. The MRC funding is available for this fixed period only. The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.
