Richard Susskind , author, IT adviser to the Lord Chief Justice of England and an independent consultant to global law firms, has been appointed professor of law at Gresham College .

Victor Burgin , professor in the history of consciousness department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has been appointed Millard professor of fine art at Goldsmiths College, London from next spring. He succeeds Michael Craig-Martin , who now holds the title of emeritus professor of fine art.

The University of Birmingham has appointed Donna Dickenson , head of the medical ethics unit at London's Imperial College, to the John Ferguson chair of global ethics in its School of Public Policy from April and Nick Freemantle , reader in epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of York, to the chair of primary care epidemiology at the Medical School from January.

At Royal Holloway College, University of London: Mary Buckley , former reader in politics at the University of Edinburgh, has been appointed professor of politics; Umberto Castiello , former reader in psychology, University of Melbourne, has become professor of psychology; Zvi Gutin , former lecturer in the department of mathematical sciences at Brunel University, has been appointed professor of computer sciences, and Jonathan Powell , former professor of Latin, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, has been appointed professor of Latin.

Graham Baker , professor of engineering at the University of Warwick, is to become dean of engineering at the University of Southern Queensland .

Vanessa Lawrence , director general of Ordnance Survey, has been appointed visiting professor at the University of Southampton 's geography department.

John Izod , professor in film and media studies at the University of Stirling, will join the new governors education sub committee of the British Film Institute .
