Grace Alderson, former senior lecturer, professor of medical microbiology; Arthur Williams, senior lecturer, professor of contemporary German studies; Haj Benkreira, reader, professor of coating and polymer processing; Mike Bibby, reader, professor in health and environmental sciences; Marc Cavazza, formerly at the University of Paris, chair in digital media; Adrian Jones, former senior lecturer at the University of Hull, professor and head of the department of applied social studies; Anthony Thody, formerly at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, professor of experimental dermatology; Ian McColm, professor of ceramic materials, head of department of industrial technology.

Cardiff University

Paul Wright, consultant in carbonate sedimentology, has been appointed to the chair of applied carbonate sedimentology.

Goldsmiths University of London

The title of emeritus has been conferred on: Kenneth Gregory, former warden of the university; Michael Musgrave, music department; Sally Tomlinson, educational studies department; David Silverman, sociology department.

University of Hull

Richard Andrews, director of research and postgraduate programmes in the schools of lifelong learning and education, Middlesex University, has been appointed to the chair in education.

University of Central England

Paul Carling, University of Vermont and Trinity College of Vermont, US, director for the graduate program in community mental health, has been appointed visiting professor in the faculty of health and community care.
