Paul Heelas, author of the New Age Movement, has been appointed to a personal chair in religion and modernity.

University of Oxford Richard Brent, professor of computing sciences at Australian National University, has been appointed to a professorship; Alain Viala, professor at the University of Paris III, has been appointed for a fixed five years as a fellow of Wadham College.

De Montfort University Vivien Lowndes, senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham, has been appointed professor of local government studies in the department of public policy and managerial studies.

Goldsmiths, University of London Irit Rogoff, formerly at the University of California, professor of art history; Martin Woolley, director of design research at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, professor of design studies; Jules Davidoff, head of psychology department, professor of psychology; Clyde Chitty, reader in the school of education at University of Birmingham, professor of educational studies; Colin Lawson, reader in music at the University of Sheffield, professor of performance studies; Angela McRobbie, reader in sociology at Loughborough University, professor of communications.
