UMIST has appointed Margaret Bruce, senior lecturer, to the chair in design management and marketing in the textiles department.

University of Dundee

Annie Anderson, leader of the research team in human nutrition at the University of Glasgow, has been appointed professor of food choice in the school of management and consumer studies.

University of Birmingham

Garth Cruickshank, senior lecturer and honorary consultant neurosurgeon, Institute for Neurological Science, Glasgow, has been appointed to the chair of neurosurgery; Rae Mackay, director, centre for land use and water resources research at University of Newcastle upon Tyne, chair in hydrogeology.

The honorary title of professor has been conferred on: Ian Crute, director, Horticulture Research International, Wellesbourne; Christopher Hood, professor of public administration and public policy at LSE; Harry Lipsitt, Wright State University, Ohio; Gerard Marcou, director, Centre de Recherches Administrative Politiques et Sociales, University of Lille II; Tony Mason, air vice-marshal; Jorgen Nielson, director, centre for study of Islam and Christian-Muslim relations; Alice Stewart, senior research fellow in the school of medicine; Gerry Stoker, professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde.

The personal title of professor has been conferred on: Ian Small, reader in the school of English; Paul Stewart, reader in the school of medicine.

University of Aberdeen

James Porter, director of the Elphinstone Institute, professor in the department of ethno-musicology at the University of California, Los Angeles, has been appointed to the chair of Scottish ethnology.
