The following have been appointed to chairs at the University of Bristol : Nigel Franks , professor of animal behaviour and ecology at the University of Bath, to the chair of biological sciences; Rosemary Deem , professor of education research at the University of Lancaster; and Angela McFarlane , director of the college centre for research in educational IT, to chairs in education; Philip Mellor , reader in the department of electronic and electrical engineering, University of Sheffield, to the chair in electrical engineering; David Hook , professor of Spanish and Spanish-American studies, King's College London, to the chair in Hispanic studies; Adam Tickell , former professor of geography at the University of Southampton, to the chair in human geography; Kelvyn Jones , professor of geography, University of Portsmouth, to the chair in human quantitative geography; Anthony Hollande , former reader in human metabolism and clinical biochemistry at the University of Sheffield, to the chair in tissue engineering.

David McFarland , reader in animal behaviour and a tutor in psychology at Balliol College, Oxford, is to be professor of biological robotics at the University of the West of England .
