Howard Thomas, dean of the commerce of business administration at the Urbana-Champaign campus, University of Illinois, has been appointed dean of the business school at the University of Warwick from May 2000.

Carole Stott, former director of the London Open College Network has been appointed chief executive of the Open College Network.

Bill Winlow, former reader in invertebrate neuroscience at the Univeristy of Leeds, has been appointed professor of neuroscience and head of department of biological sciences at the University of Central Lancashire.

Eric Prince, senior lecturer in theatre studies, University College, Scarborough, has been appointed professor and chair of the department of music theatre and dance, Colorado State University.

Steven Rose, professor of biology and director of the brain and behaviour research group at the Open University, and Hilary Rose, professor emerita of social policy at the University of Bradford, have been appointed jointly to the Gresham Chair of Physic from September for three years.

Marie Conte-Helm, reader in Japanese studies at the University of Northumbria becomes director of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, a charity promoting mutual understanding between England and Japan.

Martin Evans, former professor of mammalian genetics at the University of Cambridge, has been appointed head of the Cardiff University school of biosciences.

Huw Beynon, former professor of sociology and co-director of the centre for research on innovation and competition at Manchester University, has been appointed head of the new Cardiff school of social sciences.

Also at Cardiff, David Campbell, former professor of law at Leeds University has been appointed professorial fellow at the law school.
