Sir Dominic Cadbury, 58, chairman of Cadbury Schweppes plc, is to chair the Wellcome Trust when Sir Roger Gibbs retires on December 31. He will become a governor of the trust on June 1.

Patrick Dowling, 59, vice-chancellor and chief executive of the University of Surrey, has been appointed deputy lieutenant of Surrey.

David Chesser, former general manager of the UK shared services centre for the Thomson Corporation, has been appointed deputy vice-chancellor (resources) at the University of Northumbria.

Jonathan Hodgkin, a scientist in the division of cell biology at the Medical Research Council laboratory of molecular biology, Cambridge, has been appointed professor of genetics at the University of Oxford from February next year.

The University of Bristol has appointed the following: Bruce Hood, associate professor in the department of psychology at Harvard University, to a chair in developmental psychology; Massimo Pignatelli, reader in gastrointestinal pathology at Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine and honorary consultant at Hammersmith Hospital, London, to a chair in histopathology from April; Kenneth Fox, reader in exercise and health science at the University of Exeter, to a chair in exercise and health science from September; Sandu Popescu, Hewlett-Packard reader at the Isaac Newton Institute at the University of Cambridge, to a physics chair from October.

David Kirk, former professor of human movement studies at the University of Queensland, has been appointed to the Beckwith chair of youth sport at the Institute of Youth Sport, Loughborough University.
