Zhengxiao Guo, reader in materials at Queen Mary and Westfield College, has been awarded the Beilby Medal by the Society of Chemical Industry.

The University of Wolverhampton has awarded an honorary fellowship to Linda Bidabe, founder of the Move project (Mobility Opportunities via Education).

De Montfort University has awarded an honorary doctor of science degree to Donald Broom, the Colleen Macleod professor of animal welfare at the University of Cambridge, and an honorary fellowship to Philip Wynn, managing director of Auborn Farming Ltd.

Sarah Drury, a student from University of Wolverhampton, has been named the British Fertility Society Best Young Scientist for her research into the quality of eggs at Birmingham Women's Hospital.

The Royal Academy of Engineering has awarded postdoctoral research fellowships to Paola Lettieri, research assistant at BP Amoco Chemicals, one of the first women to win a fellowship (University College London, January 2001); Mounir Ghogho, from Morocco, who completed his PhD at France's National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse (University of Strathclyde, department of electronic and electrical engineering, developing space-time processing for mobile communications); Nicolas Green (University of Glasgow department of electronics and electrical engineering, developing a new AC electrokinetic microsystem to measure and separate tiny particles); Richard Clark, research associate funded by Huntleigh Technology plc (University of Sheffield, department of electronics and electrical engineering).

Ravinder Maini and Marc Feldmann of the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology division at the Imperial College School of Medicine, have been awarded the Crafoord Prize by the king of Sweden at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for their work on new treatments for rheumatoid arthritis.

David Hothersall, professor of environmental acoustics at the University of Bradford, is to receive the R. W. B. Stephens Medal from the Institute of Acoustics for his research and teaching work on the reduction of sound pollution.
