  • Tim Wilson is to take over as vice-chancellor of Hertfordshire University next year when Neil Buxton retires after 15 years. Professor Wilson, a former rugby coach, has been at the university since 1991. As pro vice-chancellor, he has overseen the £120 million de Havilland campus project.
  • Geoff Crispin will become vice-chancellor of Thames Valley University when Kenneth Barker, retires in the new year. Professor Crispin, who is a town planner by profession, is deputy vice-chancellor and was part of the senior management team brought in after the university failed a quality inspection in 1998. He will oversee the university's merger with Reading College.
  • Jack Beatson , of the University of Cambridge, has been appointed justice of the High Court.
  • Nick Scheele , of Ford Motor Company, is to be the  fourth chancellor of the University of Warwick.
  • Vince Mayne , of Newcastle University, has been appointed the first director of sport at Coventry University.
  • John Turner , senior vice-principal at Royal Holloway, University of London, has been appointed deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Surrey; Greg Melly, of Global Radio, has been appointed director of corporate services; and Bob O'Keefe, formerly at Brunel University, has been appointed head of the management school at Surrey.
  • Richard Birmingham has been named as the country's first professor of small craft design, at Newcastle University.
  • James Calderhead , of the University of Bath, has been appointed vice-principal at the University of Dundee.
