Drummond Bone , principal of Royal Holloway, University of London, has been appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Liverpool . He will succeed Philip Love next September.

Derec Llwyd Morgan , vice-chancellor of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, has been appointed senior vice-chancellor of the University of Wales .

Entrepreneur Lord Ashcroft has been appointed chancellor of Anglia Polytechnic University . He succeeds Lord Prior.

Robin Arak , head of information services at the University of Brighton, has been appointed chief executive of the United Kingdom Education and Research Networking Association , the company responsible for the management of the Janet network. He will succeed Geoff McMullen in December.

John Benington , head of the Warwick Business School Local Government Centre, is to become director of the Institute of Governance and Public Management on October 1.

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts has appointed Giles Auckland-Lewis , head of the School of Critical and Contextual Studies at the Cumbria College of Art and Design, director of higher education.

Alan Hamlin , dean of social sciences and professor of economics at the University of Southampton, has been app-ointed to the Competition Commission 's reporting panel, an independent public body set up to replace the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

Tidu Maini , senior vice-president of SchlumbergerSema, has been appointed pro-rector, public and corporate affairs, at Imperial College, London , from January. He will manage the commercialisation of intellectual assets.

At the University of Surrey , Barry Evans , director of the centre for communications systems research, and David Airey , head of the school of management studies for the service sector, have been appointed pro vice-chancellors.

The University of Leeds has made two professorial appointments. Neil Ward , former senior lecturer in geography at the University of Newcastle, has been appointed to a chair inhuman geography; and Clive Adams , former honorary consultant in general adult psychiatry at the University of Oxford and coordinator of the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group, has been appointed to a chair in adult psychiatry.
