Members of the national council of the Learning and Skills Council, announced this week, are: Chris Banks, managing director of Coca-Cola Great Britain; Chris Humphries, director-general of the British Chambers of Commerce; Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of the National House Building Council; Deanne Julius, member of the monetary policy committee of the Bank of England; Sir Michael Lickiss, chairman of the southwest of England regional development agency; Jane Drabble, former director of education at the BBC; John Monks, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress; Robert Fryer, director of the University of Southampton New College; Leisha Fullick, chief executive of Islington Council; John Merry, deputy leader of Salford City Council; George Sweeney, principal of Knowsley Community College; Helen Edwards, chief executive of Nacro; Alexandra Burslem, vice-chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University; and Lynne Morris, principal of Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College, Birmingham.

Judith Milne, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Boston University, is to become principal of St Hilda's College, University of Oxford in August 2001.

The following have become University of Cambridge professors: Christopher Dobson is to be John Humphrey Plummer professor, department of chemistry; Ian Roberts, of the University of Stuttgart, is to be professor of linguistics; David Menon, a lecturer in the department of medicine, is to be professor of anaesthesia; Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan has been elected Schlumberger professor of complex physical systems; John Bell is to be professor of law; Peter Jones, formerly at the University of Nottingham, has been elected the new professor of psychiatry; James Shilling, chair of real estate finance and urban economics at the University of Wisconsin's business school, has been appointed Cambridge's first professor of real estate finance; and Timothy Pedley, G. I. Taylor professor of fluid mechanics, has been appointed head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics.

Gillian Hundt, former lecturer at the London School of Hygiene, has become professor in social sciences at the Univer-sity of Warwick. Ederyn Williams, former managing director of University of Leeds Innovations Ltd, has become director of Warwick Ventures.
