Lord Butler, master of University College, Oxford, secretary of the cabinet and head of the home civil service between 1988 and 1998, and Lord Morris, chancellor of the University of Glamorgan and former attorney general for England and Wales, have been made knights companion to the most noble order of the garter.

The University of Manchester has appointed: Alan Dyson, director of the special needs research centre at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, professor of education; Ser-Huang Poon, senior lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, professor of finance; Richard Stapleton, professor of finance at the University of Strathclyde, professor of finance; Paul Fouracre, professor of history at the University of London, professor of medieval history; David Richards, senior lecturer in mental health nursing, professor of mental health nursing; Jørgen Vestbo, consultant physician in respiratory medicine at Hvidovre Hospital, Copenhagen, professor of respiratory medicine; Murray Pittock, professor of literature at Strathclyde University, professor of Scottish and Romantic literature; Helen Worthington, former reader in dental statistics, professor of evidence-based care.

The University of Lincoln has appointed: Brian Winston, head of the school of media and creative industries at the University of Westminster, dean of media and humanities; and Graeme Wilkinson, head of the school of computing and information systems at Kingston University, dean of applied computing sciences.

Gary McCulloch of the University of Sheffield is to be the first holder of the Brian Simon chair at the Institute of Education, London.
