Derek Holder, managing director of the Institute of Direct Marketing, has been appointed the university's first professor of direct marketing.

University of Teesside

Nigel Oswald, director of teaching in general practice at the University of Cambridge, has been appointed the university's first professor in primary healthcare, a post jointly created with the University of Newcastle and Tees Health Authority.

University of Wales, Bangor

Jenny Thomas, senior lecturer at the University of Lancaster, professor of linguistics; Howard Davies, head of school of sociology and social anthropology at the University of Kent, chair of social theory and institutions.

Goldsmiths, University of London

Tim Newburn, head of crime, justice and youth studies at the Policy Studies Institute, has been appointed to the Joseph Rowntree foundation chair in urban social policy.

Nene College of Higher Education

Charles Brooker, professor of nursing at the University of Manchester, has been appointed visiting professor.
