King's College, London. Readers promoted to chairs: Robert Blackburn, constitutional law; Clive Bush, American literature; Gareth Jones, cell biology; Giovanni Mann, vascular physiology; Yuri Safarov, mathematics. The following senior lecturers have been promoted to professorships: Christopher Dandeker, military sociology; Peter Williams, environmental science.

Aston University

Promoted to professorships: David Bennett, senior lecturer and head of the business school's technology and innovation research centre; Rudiger Gorner, reader in languages and European studies; John Horner, reader and fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry; Roger Kettle, dean of the faculty of engineering and applied science and head of the civil and mechanical engineering division.

University of Strathclyde

Mono Chakrabarti, former reader in the department of social work and Dave Mearns, reader and director of the counselling unit have been appointed professor.

University of Warwick

Appointed professors: Christopher Clark, former professor of history at the University of York; Jeremy Dale, former senior lecturer in primary care and honorary consultant at King's College school of medicine and dentistry; Karen Legge, former professor of organisational behaviour at Lancaster University.

Ronald Dworkin, professor at Oxford University becomes Quain professor of jurisprudence; Ian Kennedy, King's College London has been appointed to the chair in health law, ethics and policy.
