Dame Veronica Sutherland , deputy secretary general of the Commonwealth Secretariat, has been elected president of Lucy Cavendish College , Cambridge, from next October. She succeeds Baroness Perry of Southwark.

John Laver , former vice-principal of Edinburgh University, has been appointed research professor in speech sciences at Queen Margaret University College , Edinburgh.

At Imperial College , London, Sir George Alberti , professor of medicine at Newcastle University is the new chair of metabolic medicine; Charles Cowley , associate professor in physics and astronomy at the University of California, has been appointed to the chair of plasma physics; and John Couchman , professor of cell biology at the University of Alabama, will take up the chair of cell biology in the division of biomedical sciences.

Gresham College has appointed as fellows for three years: Colin Pillinger , professor of planetary sciences at the Open University; Lynette Hunter , professor of English at Leeds University; Stephen Pratt , professor of music at Liverpool Hope University and Tim Connell , head of languages for the professions at the department of continuing education, City University.

Haridimos Tsoukas , former professor of organisational theory at the University of Essex and a part-time professor at the Athens Laboratory of Business Administration, has joined the University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business as professor of organisational theory and behaviour.

Pat Jones has been appointed director of the Knowledge Exploitation Fund at the Welsh Funding Councils. She joins them from Carmarthenshire College.

Amin Rajan , chief executive of the Centre for Research in Employment and Technology in Europe; Garry Hawkes , chairman of the National Training Organisation National Council and Sue Thomas , director of Redwood Publishing, have been appointed as new members of the Investors in People UK management board.

Barry Taylor , former head of communications at Bristol City Council, has been appointed director of communications and marketing at the University of Bristol .

Sir David Carter , surgeon to the Queen, has been elected vice-president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . He succeeds Sir James Armour.

Peter Green , professor of statistics at the University of Bristol, has been elected president of the Royal Statistical Society .

David Llewellyn , professor of money and banking at Loughborough University, has been elected president of Suerf - an international network of banks, financial institutions and academics.
