Three new members of the Medical Research Council are: Nancy Rothwell, research professor in physiology at the University of Manchester; Ian MacLennan, director of the Birmingham University centre for immune regulation; and Peter Fellner, chief executive of the Celltech Group. Sir Ross Buckland, chief executive and director of Unigate, is to serve another term.

Hans Van Ginkel, rector of the United Nations University and a former rector of Utrecht University, has been elected president of the International Association of Universities.

Elaine Thomas is to be director of the Surrey Institute of Art and Design from January 2001.

Xinzhong Gary Zu is the first finance expert from the People's Republic of China to become a professor in a UK business school. He has been given a personal chair in finance at Lancaster University Management School.

Carol Cox is to be the first professor of advanced clinical practice at St Bartholomew's School of Nursing and Midwifery.

John Bailey will be director of the Aston University new business partnership unit, a one-stop-shop for business.

The new dean of the Warwick Business School is Howard Thomas who has come from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Sir Brian Follett, vice-chancellor of the University of Warwick, is to be non-executive chairman of the Arts and Humanities Research Board.

Graeme Barker, of the archaeological studies department at Leicester University, is to serve on the government's review of policies relating to the historical environment being undertaken by English Heritage.

Chris Sambrook and Steve Bull, lecturers at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education, are two of five sports psychologists for the British Olympic team. Mr Bull is the team's manager of psychology services and Mr Sambrook is the rowing team's psychologist.

Michael Burr has been awarded a readership at the centre for applied public health medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine.

James Byrne, former head of the department of theology and religious studies at St Mary's College, Strawberry Hill, has been appointed associate professor of religious studies at St Michael's College, Vermont, United States.
