Timothy Emlyn Jones, assistant principal (academic affairs) at Wimbledon School of Art, has been appointed deputy director of Glasgow School of Art. He succeeds James Cosgrove, who will retire later this autumn.

To celebrate its 175th anniversary, Birkbeck College has appointed five new anniversary chairs. They are: William Rowe, former professor of Latin American cultural studies at King's College, London, professor of poetics; Lynne Segal, former professor of gender studies at Middlesex University, professor of psychology and gender studies; Mark Mazower, reader in history at the University of Sussex, professor of modern history, from next year; Ian Christie, former professor of film studies, professor of film and media history; and Joni Lovenduski, professor of politics at the University of Southampton, professor of politics and sociology from February next year.

In addition to the anniversary chairs, Birkbeck has appointed to professorships: Paul Bridge, former principal scientist at CABI Bioscience, Kew professor of mycology, a new post jointly funded by Birkbeck and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; Jay Belsky, former distinguished professor of human development at Pennsylvania State University, professor of psychology, replacing William Marslen-Wilson; Boris Mirkin, visiting research professor at the German National Centre of Cancer Research, professor of computer science from January next year, replacing Guy Fitzgerald; Elizabeth Hounsell, former reader in carbohydrate biochemistry at University College London, head of the school of biological and chemical sciences, replacing J. K. Nicholson; and John Driffill, former professor of economics at the University of Southampton, professor of economics.

Reza Sotudeh, former professor of computer engineering at the University of Teesside's school of science and technology, has been appointed head of the department of electronic communication and electrical engineering at the University of Hertfordshire.

Chris Greensted, former director of the University of Strathclyde business school, has joined the University of Plymouth as dean of its business school.

Chris Harris, director of communications and public affairs at the University of Newcastle, has been appointed chair of the Higher Education External Relations Association. He replaces Christine Hodgson, head of communications and publicity at the University of East London.

David Huntley, former director of research and professor of physical oceanography at the Institute of Marine Studies, Plymouth, has been appointed head of the institute.

Philip Candelas, former professor of physics at the University of Texas, Austin, has been appointed to the Rouse Ball professorship of mathematics at the University of Oxford and has become a fellow of Wadham College. He succeeds Sir Roger Penrose, who retired from the chair in July.
