APPOINTMENTS

Academy of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences
Lawrence Freedman
, professor and head of the school of social science and public policy at King's College, London, has been elected as an academician.

Caledonian College of Engineering in Oman
Glasgow Caledonian university has announced its appointment of Frank McIntosh as principal of the new college in Oman. He is a former pro vice-chancellor at Robert Gordon's University, Aberdeen and is a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

University of East London
Susan Price
, currently associate dean of academic affairs in the Faculty of Languages and European Studies at the University of the West of England, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor (academic);
Alan Sibbald , dean of the faculty of engineering at computing at Napier University, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor (research, outreach and infrastructure).

Imperial College, London
Heather Allen
, formerly chief information officer (covering Europe, Asia and Australasia) with William M. Mercer Limited has been appointed as the college's first director of information and communication technologies.

King's College, London
Ian Caldwell
, former director of estates at Imperial College, has been appointed director of estates.


AWARDS AND PRIZES

British Thoracic Society
Matthew Hind
, Wellcome clinical fellow in the MRC centre for developmental neurobiology at King's College, London was awarded the title, Young Investor of the Year .

BUPA Foundation
The foundation's Epidemiology Award has been presented to four members of the stroke medicine team in the department of public health at the school of medicine, King's College, London: Mehool Patel , Cother Hajat , Kate Tilling and Ajay Bjalla .

Descartes Prize 2001
One of the two prizes for 2001 has been presented to Michael North , reader in synthetic organic chemistry at King's College, London for his project entitled "development of new asymmetric catalysts for chemical manufacturing.

East Midlands Playwriting Competition
Andrea Weatherston
, a theatre studies student at the University of Derby, was presented with first prize for her play Riding the Rollercoaster .

Sheffield Hallam University
The University has recognised the teaching and research achievements of sociology lecturer, Anthony Rosie , with the award of a professorship.
Chris Rust , the university's course leader for the MA Design programme has been awarded a professorship.

Universite de Montpelier
Anthony Mann
, professor of epidemiological psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, has been awarded the title of professeur associe .

University of Ulster
Chris Barnett, former vice-chairman of the UK Association of Postgraduate Medical Schools and current head of the university's technology transfer section, has been awarded the title of professor. He is also chief executive of the university's science research parks and vice-president of Coleraine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

, former head of the NI Civil Service, in recognition of his work in the public service and to higher education;
Amanda Burton , actress, in recognition for her services to popular drama and television; Sinead Cusack, in recognition of her services to theatre and drama;

Robert Hanna , pro-chancellor of the university, in recognition of his contribution to the work of the University and to public life in Northern Ireland.

Martin Naughton , chief executive of Glen Electric, is honoured for his contribution to Irish business.

Terry Baker , formerly professor at the University of Bradford, in recognition of his services to biomedical sciences;
Darren Clarke , golfer, recognition of his services to sport;
Marye Anne Fox , chancellor of North Carolina State University;
Eddie Jordan , Formula 1 team founder, in recognition of his services to international sport.

Sean Brady , archbishop, in recognition of his promotion of peace and reconciliation in Ireland; Robin Eames , archbishop, in recognition of his promotion of peace and reconciliation in Ireland; Margaret Elliott , chairman of the National Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland;

Katie Pratt
, winner of the 2001 Jerwood Painting Prize, has been awarded an AHRB (Arts and Humanities Research Board) Fellowship at Winchester School of Art Fine Art Painting Department.
