* Ray Lewis , director of human resources at Glasgow University, will join the merged university in Manchester as director of human resources on May 1.

* Brenda Hale , lord justice of appeal since 1999, governor of the Centre for Policy on Ageing (1990-93) and president of National Family Mediation, has been installed as chancellor of Bristol University.

* Iain Torrance , moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and professor in patristics and Christian ethics at Aberdeen University, has been appointed president of Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey, US.

* Andy Hudson , head of secondary education at Greenwich University, has been appointed head of the School of Education at Kingston University. He replaces Mary Bousted who was elected general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.

* Lancaster University has appointed Simon Bainbridge to a chair in romantic studies in the department of English and creative writing. He is currently head of the School of English at Keele University. David Archard , reader in moral philosophy at St Andrews University, has been appointed director of the university's Institute for Environment, Philosophy and Public Policy.

* Bill Morris , former general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, has been appointed chancellor of Staffordshire University.

* Chris Gorman , executive chairman of The Gadget Shop and founder of DX Communications, has been appointed honorary professor of Paisley University.
