The University of Leeds has appointed: Paul Garner , former professor of Spanish and Latin American studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London, Cowdray chair of Spanish; Garik Markarian to a chair in communications systems at the School of Electronic and Electrical Engin-eering; Sally Johnson , formerly senior lecturer at Lancaster University, to a chair in linguistics and head of linguistics and phonetics; Stephen Westland professor of colour science and technology in the School of Design. Judy Delin , former head of research at the Information Design Unit, has joined the School of Modern Languages and Cultures.

Jon Davison , head of the School of Education at London Metropolitan University, has been appointed dean of initial and continuing professional development at the Institute of Education.

Christine Finn , writer and archaeologist, has been appointed writer-in-residence at the University of Bradford.

Miles Maylor , senior lecturer at the University of Glamorgan's School of Care Services, has been appointed academic adviser to an Action On programme covering plastic surgery, one of the National Health Service Modernisation Agency's projects.

Dylan Evans has been appointed senior lecturer in intelligent autonomous systems, the faculty of computing, engineering and mathematics at the University of the West of England.

Maggie Pearson , deputy director of human resources at the Department of Health and former professor at the University of Liverpool, has been appointed deputy vice-chancellor of Keele University.
