Susan Baker , a reader in social sciences at Cardiff University, has been appointed King Carl XVI Gustaf's professor of environmental sciences for 2003-04 based at Umeå University, Sweden.

The National Health Service University has appointed to its executive team: Bob Fryer , former assistant vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton, as chief executive; Philip Candy , professor in the department for education, science and training in Canberra, as director of learning strategy and standards; Jeffrey Defries , former secretary of the Institute of Cancer Research, as secretary and head of corporate affairs; Sue Eggleton , finance director and deputy chief executive of Royal Surrey County Hospital and NHS Trust, as director of resources and planning; Derek Grover , previously director of adult learning in the Lifelong Learning Directorate of the Department for Education and Skills, as director of development; Catherine Hastings , communications director at London Business School, as director of communications and information; Neil Johnson , former director of postgraduate general practice education at Oxford University, as director of learning programmes; Tony Laurance , regional director for the NHS in the Southwest, as director of collaborations and operations.

Gordon Hewitt , distinguished visiting professor at the University of Michigan's graduate business school, has been appointed chairman of the court at the University of Abertay Dundee.

Paul Bacsich , head of telematics in the education research group at Sheffield Hallam University, has been appointed director of special projects at UK eUniversities Worldwide
