LANGUAGE TEACHING

The following have been appointed to the governing body of the Centre for Information of Language Teaching and Research: Derek Winslow, director and chief executive of Cardiff Institute of Higher Education, and chairman of the Policy Group of the Languages Lead Body, for three years; Jim Beale, director of PA Consulting Group, Newcastle, for a further three years; Janet Little, former head of languages at Reigate Sixth Form College, and inspector with the Further Education Funding Council, for a further three years; Mary Ryan, languages adviser with Avon County Council, and Association for Language Learning policy committee member for a further three years.

University of Bradford Alan Waton, vice president and former president of the Association of University Teachers, has been appointed dean of the faculty of social sciences at the University of Bradford.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTHUMBRIA Mohammed Sarwar, former head of mechanical engineering and systems division at Sheffield Hallam University, has been appointed head of department of mechanical engineering and manufacturing systems.

GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY Dan Kirkwood, formerly at Robert Gordon University and a consultant for the oil industry in the United Kingdom, has been appointed head of the department of engineering.

David K. Harrison, formerly of Staffordshire University and UMIST, has been appointed assistant head of the department of engineering.

UNIVERSITY OF LUTON Colin J. Coulson-Thomas, leader of the European Commission's Cobra initiative, has been appointed dean of the faculty of management.

CHICHESTER INSTITUTE OF HIGHER EDUCATION Wendy Scott, former head of languages at Kingston University, has been appointed deputy director. The Chichester Institute is the new name of the former West Sussex Institute of Higher Education.
