About Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS)
Basic information and contact details for Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS)
The Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS) is a public advanced research university located in Zanjan, Iran, founded in 1991 by Professor Yousef Sobouti. Designed to become a national centre of excellence in basic sciences, IASBS was upgraded to university status shortly after its inception.
Situated in the foothills of Iranian Azerbaijan, Zanjan lies approximately 298 km northwest of Tehran and is known for its historic city gates and nearby archaeological treasures such as the UNESCO‑listed Soltaniyeh Dome.
The institute’s suburban campus, located in the green Gavazang area, is designed to blend naturally with its environment, featuring solar‑powered buildings, abundant greenery, and an emphasis on sustainability.
IASBS comprises six primary departments: mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science and IT, earth sciences, and biological sciences, which offer a range of degree programmes. Although IASBS began exclusively as a graduate‑level institution, it also offers a BSc in computer engineering and IT, including a dual-degree programme in partnership with Heriot‑Watt University (UK).
It also hosts two dedicated research centres: the Centre for Research in Climate Change and Global Warming, and the Research Centre for Basic Sciences and Modern Technologies.
Courses are competitive and require excellence in Iran’s national entrance exam, the “Konkour”. IASBS currently educates approximately 1,200 students with a faculty‑researcher ratio that supports small, focused doctoral cohorts.
