Top paid v-cs pull ahead

February 7, 1997

In the third THES top people's pay survey we are able to draw direct comparisons for the first time between pay over two consecutive years, because 1995-96 was the second year in which institutions were required to disclose top salaries. Figures are derived from 1995-96 annual reports.

Most institutions disclosed an "emolument" covering pay and other benefits, but excluding employers' pension contributions (18.5 per cent in the old university sector, 8.05 per cent in new universities). This is the figure given, except where the report clearly indicated that pension payments were included. (*) indicates where it was impossible to disaggregate.

The financial year used ended on July 31 1996. Some heads of institution have since left. Some had been in post for less than a year. () marks where a figure is used to indicate either a pro rata rate, or the combined pay to both post-holders during the year.
