* Anton Muscatelli , professor of political economy and vice-principal of Glasgow University, has been named principal of Heriot-Watt University.

* Oxford University has appointed: Ian Goldin , former vice-president of the World Bank, director of the James Martin 21st Century School; Sarmila Bose , visiting professor at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Bombay, director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism; Michael Devereux , former professor of economics at Warwick University, director of the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation; Tom Snijders , professor of methodology and statistics at the University of Groningen, professor of statistics (half-time); Sten Eirik Waelgaard Jacobson , former professor of hematopoietic stem-cell laboratory at Lund University, professor of developmental stem-cell biology; Peter Neary , former professor of political economy at University College Dublin, professor of economics; Neil Shephard , director of the Oxford Finance Research Centre, to a professorship of economics; and Edmund Herzig , former senior lecturer at Manchester University, professor of Persian studies.

* Exeter University has made Melanie Williams , professor of law at Swansea University, head of law school; and Michele Shoebridge , former director of information services at Birmingham, director of information, library and IT services.
