Founded in 1666, Lund University is a public research university in Sweden that consistently ranks among the world’s top universities.

Located in the city of Lund, in southern Sweden (close to Denmark and Germany), the university also has campuses in Malmö and Helsingborg.

Home to over 41,000 students, 3,000 of them postgraduate, and more than 7,000 staff, it is considered to be one of the biggest Nordic educational and research institutions.

It also boasts one of Scandinavia’s most extensive educational programmes, with over 300 degree programmes and 2,000 courses. Its areas of teaching and research expertise include economics, arts and humanities, theology, law, music and theatre, medicine, science and social sciences.

Lund University’s Library, founded in 1666 at the same time as the university, is one of the country’s oldest and largest buildings.

The city itself dates back to 990, offering 1,000 years of history in its cobble-stone streets, alongside the more modern day attractions of shopping, restaurants and music venues.

With over 600 partner universities in more than 70 countries, Lund belongs to the League of European Research Universities, and Universitas 21, a global network of research universities.

It’s also home to two important scientific facilities: the MAX IV – an electron accelerator laboratory for research into radiation, nuclear physics and accelerator physics – and the European Spallation Source (ESS), for materials research.

The city of Lund has the youngest population of any in Sweden and its atmosphere is described as ‘youthful and laid back.’

The university has dark blue and bronze as its colours, and a motto, Ad utrumque, which translates as ‘Prepared for both the book and the sword’.

It lays claim to many innovations and new discoveries, including facial recognition technology, the wireless technology Bluetooth (named after a Viking chief) and Nicorette, the world’s first nicotine medicine developed to help smokers quit their habit.

Description The Mubadala Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (Mubadala ACCESS), New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit an Associate Research Scientist to support a major NYU Abu Dhabi-OceanX initiative focused on advancing coral reef monitoring, applied research and regional capacity building across Southeast Asia, with particular emphasis on Malaysia. The successful applicant will play a central role in coordinating and implementing a multi-year coral reef monitoring and training program across Southeast Asia. The Associate Research Scientist will contribute to the design, coordination, and delivery of annual field missions aboard the RV OceanXplorer, support the implementation of standardized reef monitoring protocols, and deliver hands-on training programs for regional partners. The position includes supporting pre and post mission workshops, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and contributing to the development of regional scientific networks. The Associate Research Scientist will also assist in organizing an annual Southeast Asia learning exchange hosted at NYU Abu Dhabi, supporting agenda development, training sessions in reef monitoring and data analysis, and coordination with university administrative units. A key component of the role involves contributing to the organization and management of data and metadata systems associated with Southeast Asian reef monitoring activities conducted in partnership with OceanX. The candidate will support standardized data workflows, quality control, documentation, and the development of open-access products tailored to researchers, decision-makers, NGOs, and public audiences. The role further includes supporting reporting, communications, and stakeholder coordination across NYUAD, OceanX, Dalio Philanthropies, and regional partners. The Associate Research Scientist will contribute to progress updates, annual reports, stakeholder briefings, and public-facing communication materials in collaboration with NYUAD and OceanX Communications teams. The position is based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with regular travel to Southeast Asia during mission and training periods. Applicants must hold a PhD in Marine Biology, Marine Science, Coral Reef Ecology, or a closely related field, with at least 3 years of relevant experience in their field (not including the years obtaining the PhD or equivalent terminal degree). Candidates must have demonstrated experience in coral reef monitoring programs in Southeast Asia, ideally in Malaysia, and hold SCUBA certification at a minimum of PADI Advanced Open Water (or equivalent). Experience delivering training or capacity-building programs, engaging with regional partners or government agencies, and contributing to peer-reviewed publications is required. Fluency in English is essential, and fluency in Malay/Bahasa Melayu is considered a strong asset. Preferred qualifications include advanced diving certification, training in ecological monitoring protocols, and experience with GIS, data management platforms, or applied reef assessment frameworks. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  Job Details This Research Engineer will contribute to an international joint project related to policy-making in urban planning and design, focusing on developing a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework and tool. The work will involve integrating results from GeoTOPSIS and/or VectorMCDA in QGIS, enhancing spatial decision support for blue–green infrastructure and ecosystem service evaluation. The Research Engineer will lead the software development and interface programming, working closely with the GIS Research Fellow and interdisciplinary project team members to create a user-friendly, scalable decision-support tool for planners and policymakers. As part of understanding the ecosystem services that are involved in Singapore, the successful candidate will also be expected to perform some field-based data collection during the duration of the project. Key Responsibilities Work closely with the PI, Co-PI, and research team to ensure timely completion of all project deliverables. Implement and enhance GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA algorithms within QGIS using Python or equivalent programming frameworks. Develop a user-friendly interface (QGIS plugin or web-based application) for decision-making and data visualization. Collaborate with the GIS Research Fellow to integrate ecosystem service layers and model outputs. Conduct tool testing, validation, and iterative refinement based on stakeholder feedback. Manage documentation, data pipelines, and version control. Support system deployment on a secure project server and ensure cross-platform interoperability. Assist in project management and support the team in facilitating and organizing workshops, stakeholder sessions, and policy dialogues. Be involved in regular field work data collection and to perform environmental and biodiversity surveys (fish, birds and insects) as part of a research team. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geomatics, Environmental Informatics, or related fields. Strong programming skills in Python, R, or JavaScript for spatial analysis, interface development, or web applications. Experience in plugin or dashboard development (e.g., PyQGIS, Dash, Streamlit, or web-GIS frameworks). Familiarity with GIS concepts and geospatial data structures; experience with QGIS or ArcGIS will be an advantage. Ability to translate analytical models into intuitive, interactive user interfaces. Good teamwork, documentation, and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and able to learn new tools and frameworks independently. Additional Note: While prior experience with GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA is not mandatory, it will be considered a strong advantage. On-the-job training will be provided to equip the candidate with necessary methods and integration workflows with ecosystem service models and spatial datasets.
