Mary Stacey , a former solicitor specialising in employment law, has been nominated chair of the Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff , the new national pay negotiating machinery for higher education.

Nottingham Trent University has appointed: Mark Darlison , formerly of the University of Hamburg, to professor of molecular cell biology; Leslie Henshall , formerly of Brunel University, to professor of advanced materials and design; Paul Joyce , formerly of the University of London, to professor and head of strategic management and marketing; and David Smith , formerly of University College Northampton, to professor in the department of strategic management and marketing.

The University of Leicester has appointed: Christopher Dyer , formerly of the University of Birmingham, professor of regional and local history; Adrian Hyde-Price , formerly of the University of Birmingham, professor of politics and international relations; and Jonathan Percy, formerly of the University of Birmingham, research professor of chemistry. It has also appointed: Nigel Aston , formerly of the University of Luton, lecturer in early modern European history; Marcello Felisatti , formerly of Il Universita degli Studi di Roma, lecturer in mathematics; Michael Tretyakov , formerly of the University of Swansea, lecturer in the department of mathematics and computer science; Janet Berry , formerly of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside's conservation centre, lecturer in the department of museum studies; Karim Khalid , formerly of Leicestershire and Rutland Healthcare, lecturer in child and adolescent psychiatry; Janet Greenlees , formerly of the University of Exeter, lecturer in the department of economic and social history; Mark Shiel , formerly of Sheffield Hallam University, lecturer in film studies; John Hennessy , formerly of Aberystwyth University, temporary lecturer in genetics; Hella Eckhardt , formerly of the University of Cardiff, lecturer in archaeology; and D. Adam , formerly of Queen Margaret Hospital, Dumfermline, clinical lecturer in the department of surgery.

Artist and designer Lucy Orta has been appointed by the London Institute professor of fashion at the London College of Fashion.

Tim Unwin , professor of geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, has been appointed director of Imfundo, a Department for International Development initiative that aims to develop the use of information and communication technologies to support education in developing countries.
