Kevin Boyle , director of Essex University's Human Rights Centre, has been appointed senior adviser to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights . He will hold the post for a year from September.

Jules Pretty , director of the Centre for Environment and Society at Essex University, has been elected Andrew D. White professor-at-large at Cornell University for six years.

Martin Cave , former vice-principal of Brunel University, has been made professor in the Warwick Business School and director of the Centre for Management Under Regulation at Warwick University from October.

Michael Allen , former professor at the University of Bristol, has been appointed director of the Centre for Scientific Computing at Warwick from October.

Gerry Burns , chairman of the review body on post-primary education and a former parliamentary ombudsman for Northern Ireland, is to become pro-chancellor of the University of Ulster from October.

Geoff Hope-Terry , director of finance and business services at Bradford University, is to join Manchester University in January as director of finance.

The Royal Northern College of Music has appointed Richard Wigley , head of artistic planning at the Halle Concerts Society, head of performance and programming; oboist Melinda Maxwell director of woodwind studies; and clarinet soloist Linda Merrick director of performance studies and senior tutor in clarinet.
