John Wood , dean of engineering at Nottingham University, has been appointed chief executive of the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils from April.

Karen Evans , formerly of the University of Surrey, has been appointed professor of education and lifelong learning at the Institute of Education, University of London . Deborah Epstein and David Gillborn have both been made professors.

The College of Law, Birmingham , has appointed three deputy directors: Bernadette Griffin , chief education and training officer at the Law Society; Barbara Heys , deputy director of staffing at the College of Law, London, and Alison Wilson , who is the administration manager at the engineering school of Staffordshire University.

Ian Howard , dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, has been appointed principal of Edinburgh College of Art .

Branwen Jarvis , reader and acting head of Welsh language and literature at the University of Wales, Bangor , has been made a professor.

The University of Warwick has made the following appointments: Paul Marginson , former principal research fellow in the Industrial Relations Research Unit, has been made professor in the business school; Leslie Willcocks , former research fellow and university reader at Templeton College, Oxford, has been made Arthur Andersen professor of e-business and information management in the business school; Kevin Sharpe , of the University of Southampton, has been made a professor in the department of English and comparative literary studies, and Peter Stanfield , formerly at the University of Leicester, has been made a professor in the department of biological sciences.

John Roberts , of Royal Holloway College, London, has been appointed head of planning at Kingston University .

Stephen Self , formerly of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, has taken up a chair in volcanology at the Open University .

The Council of Deans and Heads of United Kingdom Faculties for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting , has appointed Paul Turner , a former dean at the University of Hertfordshire, as an executive officer.
