Peter Clarke, professor of modern British history and fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, is to become master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He will replace Sir John Lyons when he retires next September.

David Hunter, former director of the Nuffield Institute for Health, has been appointed professor of health policy and management at the University of Durham. His is one of the first appointments to Durham University's new programmes in medicine and health under development in Durham and Stockton.

Colin Mercer, former director of the Institute for Cultural Policy Studies at Griffith University, Australia, has become director of the new cultural policy and planning research unit at Nottingham Trent University.

Norma Raynes, non-executive director of South Manchester NHS hospital trust, has been appointed chair of social care and associate dean of research for the faculty of healthcare and social work at the University of Salford.

David Birch, professor of

photophysics and director of the Femtosecond Research Centre in the department of physics and applied physics at the University of Strathclyde, has been appointed to the Sir C. V. Raman endowment chair of the University of Madras. He will visit India next month to give invited lectures on fluorescence spectro-scopy.
