Neil Small, senior research fellow in palliative medicine at Sheffield University, has been appointed to a chair in community and primary care at the University of Bradford. The post has been created jointly by the university, Bradford Health Authority and the Bradford Community NHS Trust with the backing of the research and development directorate at the Northern and Yorkshire Regional Office of the NHS executive.

Christopher Hall, scientific adviser at Schlumberger Cambridge Research and visiting professor of building engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, has been appointed to a chair of materials at the University of Edinburgh and director of the university's centre for materials, science and engineering.

Kirsten Malmkjaer, former assistant director of research in the research centre for English and applied linguistics at the University of Cambridge, has joined Middlesex University as professor of translation and head of the centre for research in translation.

Eva Wisemark, chairman and managing director of Optima Management Services Ltd has been appointed to serve as one of seven British commissioners on the US-UK Fulbright Commission. The commission offers awards to outstanding British and American postgraduate students, professionals and researchers who want to spend a year in the other country.

Uday Reddy, from the department of computer science at the University of Illinois, has been appointed to a chair of computer science at the University of Birmingham from January 2000.

Birmingham has also appointed Anne Edwards, professor of primary education at the University of Leeds, to a chair of pedagogic practice in the school of education from September.
