Barry Ife , professor at and acting principal of King's College London, has been appointed principal of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

David Melville , professor and vice-chancellor of the University of Kent, has been appointed chairman of the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

South Bank University has appointed: Mike Wilkinson , former director of strategy at ICI, and Peter McCaffrey, former vice-principal of Bolton Institute, as pro vice-chancellors; and John Turner, former professor of engineering and director of enterprise at Surrey University, executive dean, faculty of engineering, science and the built environment.

Hefin Jones of the School of Biosciences at Cardiff University has been appointed chair of the Welsh National Science Society.

Christine Hellier , formerly at the department of accountancy and business finance, University of Dundee, has been appointed director of research at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland.

Angela Coutts , former Monbusho research scholar at Ochanomizu Women's University in Tokyo, has been appointed lecturer in Japanese studies at the University of Sheffield's School of East Asian Studies.

Linda Jones , director of business enterprise and innovation at the University of Essex, has been appointed to the Learning and Skills Council, to steer strategic planning and funding of post-16 learning.

Anne Richards , former head of humanities at the City of Bristol College, has been appointed head of tertiary and professional education at Weston College.
